April 20, 2011 - Run, Volunteer, Give

Yo run gang,

The psychological and physical benefits of running are a gift but our sport gives back in so many ways, including charitable giving and volunteerism, how cool is that! A perfect example, Running Fit just wrote a check to Mott Children's Hospital's Save A Heart program for over $40,000! This was made possible by you, the runners, Conner O'Neill's, and the many sponsors and volunteers at this year's Shamrocks & Shenanigans race. The Martian Invasion of Races made a $7,550 donation to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society possible, again, thanks to you the runners and sponsors like Forrester's Insurance company and Asics. Today, I just wrote another check for $550 to LACASA, a women and children's shelter in Howell, MI, thanks to all our customers who supported our apparel sales program last weekend. Next week, proceeds from the Fit 5K in Novi go to charity ... and the year is just getting started!

That said, another great, charitable race is coming up on May 14 on the streets of Novi, MI, The Live Like Andi 10 Mile (Yes, a fast, road, 10 mile!), 10K and 5K. Entries are a bit down, please help out this great race and great cause and enter today at

livelikeandi.org/run-2011.html

Run, volunteer, give, live, run,

Randy Step, an obsessed runner, happy to be a part of this great running community, with all of you!

April 13, 2011 - Log it!

Yo run gang,

Perhaps the most motivational tool in the, "get your butt out the door arsenal" is keeping a running log with daily, weekly and monthly mileage totals. For those of you who keep a log, you know how motivating the weekly mileage total can be. Also keep track of your streaks and personal records or "P.R.'s", in runner's lingo. Examples of P.R.'s would be: the fastest time you ran around the 2 mile loop from your house or in a 5K race, the most days you ran in a row (a streak), the most miles you ran in a week, month or year or the longest run you ever ran. Imagine that one day as you read over your log you realize that it has been 10 weeks since you ran less than 3 days in a week, or less than 8 miles in a week. Imagine that it is a rainy Sunday and you have only run 2 times this week for a total of 6 miles. It's late, cold and you are considering blowing the day off ... but the log will haunt you, knowing you only need 2 miles to keep your streaks alive! You will run the two miles and record the new P.R., 11 weeks of your streaks! Without the log, would you have ran?

Run it and write it down!

Randy Step, the obsessed runner, with a pile of log books to prove it!

April 6, 2011 - Shocking...

Running is a valuable and important use of our time, physically and mentally, it's OK to make it a priority. For whatever it's worth, you have my blessing, ha!

How to make your run a priority? Stop the habit of running when you have time (no one has time). Plan the time you run. For the workouts to get done, they need to be scheduled. Put your daily run in your appointment calendar and give it the same priority as any other scheduled meeting. When friend invites you to dinner at 7 PM on a night you have scheduled a 6:30 PM run, explain that you have a late appointment but you can make it at 8 PM or perhaps another night. You don't need to lie, but perhaps don't tell the whole truth, the value of your run can be hard to explain. Selfish? No, being depressed, becoming a slob, having a heart attack or stroke and needing someone to feed you would be selfish, not a run that gives back so much for the time invested! Sorry, my job is to Keep You Motivated! Yikes!

Run when it's time,

Randy Step, an obsessed runner, who is thinking of getting a job as a shock jock!

March 30, 2011 - Time to breathe...

Yo run gang,

As runners, we drink a lot more fluid and consume more calories than those who are sedentary. That said, our risk of health problems due to taking in chemicals, pharmaceuticals and whatever other impurities there are in our food and water may also be greater. In addition, we suck in a lot more air that is filtered by our lungs than the average couch potato.  I believe we need to keep this in mind and look to run away from busy roadways and dirty air and look for sources of healthy food and pure water, we need to be aware.

This may sound like a shameless plug but ... We have Absopure Water delivered and available at all the Running Fit stores and in our corporate office. I believe it's a healthy, inexpensive perk to offer our staff and customers. It's not sponsored water; we pay Absopure for it and are happy to support a Michigan based company that is also the 4th largest plastic recycler in the country (They recycle here in Dundee, MI).  But yes, I admit, the water you drink at all the Running Fit events is pure water from Absopure, delivered to us at no charge from our sponsor!  Thank you Absopure for your support of the running community!

Run smart,

Randy Step, an obsessed runner, headed to run a trail where the air is fresh and clean ... And yes, with my Fuel Belt on filled with pure water.

March 23, 2011 - From the ashes

Yo run gang,

Thanks to injury, sickness and all that life throws in our path, every healthy running day is a gift.

But we runners are like the Phoenix, after the crash we have the ability to look through the smoke and ash for a route that allows us to crawl back to standing.  We then put one foot in front of the other until we are running once again.

My favorite Steve Prefontaine quote: To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift.

We owe it to the running community to volunteer, at a minimum, for one run per year, why not get it done early? There is a time to run, and a time to give back. The Martian Invasion of Races is Saturday April 2nd. For those of you not running, consider joining me as a volunteer. You'll get the infamous "Obey Me!" volunteer shirt a $30 voucher for a future Running Fit event and you get to put your special touch on the event, making it a special day for 7,000 fellow runners! Click here to volunteer!

Don't waste a single running day,

Randy Step, an obsessed runner, soon to be well again!

PS: Hey, we especially need some lead cyclists for the Martian Invasion so the lead runners don't have to think, just run! Click here to volunteer.

PS: Running Fit is hosting a Job Fair on April 6th! Click here for more info.

March 16, 2011 - Nervous steps into Spring!

I always get a kick out of runners who take to the streets and seem to bloom like wildflowers on the first nice weather days. For those of us who have kept our winter outdoor running vigil alive through sleet, gale force wind, snow and dark of night, we can secretly smile with a smug feeling of superiority and satisfaction as we wave and say hello. Ha!

The truth is, what we put into and take from our running is very personal and we don't really know what that new runner we see out there is experiencing. Perhaps they are taking those first brave and nervous steps into the fitness world and that are about to get the satisfaction we all got that time we finally got up the courage to start! Bravo and a high five to all! Runners Rock!

Please join us on April 2nd at the Martian Invasion of Races as we cheer each other on, fulfilling  our personal goals, be they finishing a run/walk through our first 5K or a personal best marathon. We will party together at the finish line as one big happy fitness community, planting the seeds in the sedentary world who watch and stand in awe of us all! Enter at martianmarathon.com

May you run forever,

Randy Step, and obsessed runner and Alien at heart, Nanu, Nanu!

March 9, 2011 - Mellowin' out...

Running is simple ... why can't life be? I know, why is this coming from a guy who lives by "Everything to excess and busy people do everything and the rest do ... What?" Yes, it's out of character but...

I'm writing today from the Caribbean island of Dominica; that should help explain things. I'm staying with my family in a cabin with no electricity, an invigorating cold shower and more natural beauty than I can describe. Each day starts with a long mountain run, a jump in the ocean followed by a breakfast consisting of local fruit and honey on some killer biscuit from a tin shack bakery. After a nap and a long swim I fall asleep reading a book in the shade. Dinner in the local village is always a new kind of fish with several unfamiliar starchy vegetables served on a plywood table.

The moral of the story? Jump out of the rut, whatever it takes, and spend some quality down time ... So we can return fit and ready to crank!

Peace out,

Randy Step, an obsessed runner who is feeling as mellow as jello.

March 2, 2011 - Where's the Obsessed Runner?

The Obsessed Runner seems to have been abducted by Leprechauns or possibly Martians. Randy

We're not really sure, he was here, there was a flash of green, he was gone!

Come to Shamrocks & Shenanigans on March 13 or the Martian Marathon on April 2 & help us look for him!

Thanks, The Crew at Running Fit

February 23, 2011 - Spring Hopes Eternal

Life is tough, even when things seem to be going well. Stress from day to day life can lead to midlife crisis, depression and even suicide, Yikes! What's the answer? I don't know for sure but I'd bet something as simple as a bucket list could get you out of the rut. What to put in there? My vote is for a half marathon, marathon, triathlon, ultra marathon (What did you expect?) Worse case scenario, you will get a clean T-shirts to wear after you finish each of them! Where to start? Go to runningfit.com and click on marathon training on the left hand links. I think you will find it entertaining, if not, maybe you should buy a Harley, learn to pole dance or jump out of a plane!

First sign of spring? I have not seen a bluebird yet but some colorful new shorts and short sleeve tops are starting to bloom on the walls at Running Fit! Feeling blue, shopping for spring is an effective way to fight SAD!

Jump the rut,

Randy Step, an obsessed runner, afraid but excited by what's next on my bucket list!

February 16, 2011 - Heat up your running!

Yo Run Gang,

Mid February, the back side of winter, it's time to heat up our running and focus on the early spring events! Pick an event, enter and commit, if you have not already. A race entry is strong motivation to get in the miles. No yikes about it, people who don't train at all show up and waddle through running events all the time so no need to get nervous. I'm serious, we all have to start somewhere, just do it, the satisfaction of finishing will be the catalyst for your future running goals!

The Martian Invasion of Races on April 2nd (6 weeks from this Saturday) gives us all something to shoot for, 5K, 10K, half marathon and marathon. Heck yes, you can be ready, here's a 6 week schedule, check out the mileage my 5K & 10K schedules call for next week and pick the event that matches where your running stands now (even if it's Zero!). Tip: walk run the miles if you need to, start with alternating 3 minutes of running with 2 minutes of walking, or find any combo that gets you there. I like Friday's and Monday's off, but you can adjust it to your life.

Run forever,

Randy Step, Obsessed Runner

February 9, 2011 - Nothin' is easy...

It is so true, nothing good comes easy. We are reminded every time we layer up for our winter runs ... So much stuff. The footing, the schlepping, the laundry but then, the amazing feeling of satisfaction and control of our lives that can't be explained or measured by the effort. A run that gives back much more than we put into it, more memorable and valuable than any fair weather run will ever be. Dig it!

The passion for what we do and sharing that passion with you makes Running Fit a wonderful place to work, thank you! If winter starts to drag and get you down, come in for a visit and a pep talk. Sure it's a shameless plug but new shoes and a new cool technical running jacket, tights, base layer top or whatever can reinvigorate and jump start your running and keep you rolling into spring. It also helps when much of our winter gear is on sale ... we told you it was shameless!

The run is always worth the effort,

Randy Step, an obsessed runner who works in a toy store!

February 2, 2011 - Let it snow...

Yo run gang,

Let it snow, we can handle it, heck, we choose to live in Michigan for a reason. The 4 seasons add variety and excitement to our daily runs, walks or slogs. You bring it on, we go play in it! The satisfaction of just getting out, breaking a healthy sweat and breathing in the fresh air is what we live for. Yee ha!

Proof is in the numbers, at the current registration rate for this Sunday's Superbowl  5K run on Feb. 6th, we expect over 2,000 runners and walkers coming out to have some fun, burn some calories and earn the best spot on the couch later that day for the big game. You'll even have the 5k Finisher's pint glass to prove it! Come join the best pre-game nonsense anywhere. Yes, we do have a big, warm indoor space to meet in before and after we frolic in the snow and some traditional Superbowl post race junk food will be served. Enter now at runsuperbowl.com and save a few bucks over the weekend price increase.

Enjoy it all,

Randy Step, an obsessed runner who plans on plodding along with some Cheese Heads & Hard Hats on Sunday. Join me!

January 26, 2011 - Look of a runner

Yo Run Gang,

It's hard not to notice ...The distance athlete's body has the chiseled look of speed, endurance and movement, even while standing still. Not a body built in a gym but a one with defined muscles sculpted by long miles and hard work. The distance athlete has an uneven tan, tight skin and an outdoor look of challenge and adventure ... Let's get out the door and get this look!

Never, ever, ever hesitate when it comes to the weather, but get excited about the elements and the challenge before you. On Sunday morning I awoke to a single digit day that had me stalling for a few more degrees before heading out. Finally out the door I was greeted by a brilliant sunny day, light winds and was soon warm, in rhythm, enjoying every step and thinking, I should have done this sooner and saved the mental energy!

Let it rip,

Randy Step, an obsessed runner who's excited to get the look but for now is content with being a work in progress!

January 19, 2011 - Do the Work

The recent Movie covering the 12 person, 198 mile Hood to Coast Relay, followed a team of non-runners who entered the event with almost no training. Each person ran (covered) about 18 miles by running (walking) 3 legs of about 6 miles each. They finished the event amazed and fulfilled by their accomplishment.

Ive often said you can put in the miles and do all the work before race day so that you can enjoy and savor the event, or you can enter the event under-trained and do all the work during the event. Both methods will give you a sense of satisfaction and personal fulfillment. (With the first, a much slower finish time than you were capable of and a miserable recovery period.)

The message here is that attempting something way out of your comfort zone and perhaps seemingly impossible, is often worth the risk. As the late running philosopher Dr. George Sheehan said, in a distance event we get down to bedrock, we find strength and courage we never knew we had, we give witness to a person we have never been before. In the race, we discover and form the self, perhaps our most important function, it is an adventure in self discovery! Whatever you are considering, take the leap, just do it!

Live the adventure,

Randy Step, an obsessed runner who realizes my perceived limits are most likely too conservative, yikes!

January 5, 2011 - Resolved: To Run!

Yo run gang,

Every run can be enjoyed with the right attitude but I'm surprised how often I have to remind myself that attitude is a choice.  An example, a cold windy run where I find myself under dressed can be seen as miserable ... or a great challenge. OK, a miserable but challenging run! (Shameless plug, new running gear always helps jumpstart an attitude adjustment!)

Just because the New Year has started, don't let your head trick you into the idea that because you missed making some positive changes to your life by a few days that it's too late to do so! Every day of the year is a good day to set goals and commit to positive changes and if you falter along the way, every day is a good day to start over and re-commit yourself! Nothing good comes easy, never ever give up hope; the rewards along the way will be worth all the effort.

For those of you starting off the year with an injury that is keeping you from your run, your goal is set for you! Continue to research and set a course of action to get healthy and take satisfaction in your commitment, no matter how slow the progress or even in case of a setback, you are on a mission of self discovery!

Enjoy the adventure,

Randy Step, an obsessed runner on and off the road to personal fulfillment.

December 29, 2010 - Too Fast!!

Yo Run Gang,

My New Year's resolution is to not let ego get me into trouble with my running. Ego comes into play in many ways, for example, when I run with people I often find myself keeping up with them and running too fast a pace or longer than I planned or where it fits into my training, risking injury. During races, a pain might come up with only a mile to go and I foolishly push through it only to lose valuable running days, lost to recovery, all because of ego.

When we start to compare our running with someone else's we are asking for trouble. We all have different genetic makeup, health histories and life experiences, no two people are alike. 3 miles might be a fulfilling long run distance for one person and it might be 30 miles for another. I plan to set goals and training schedules that will be fulfilling to me and applaud all people who have reached their personal running goals whatever they might be.

Let's crush ego and experience a new found feeling of freedom and self fulfillment!

Randy Step, and obsessed runner, setting realistic goals and missing fewer days of running in 2011, so I can better enjoy my running obsession!

December 22, 2010 - Stay Calm...

Yo run gang,

The holidays are a great time to share the gift of running, walking, moving. After the big holiday dinner, invite everyone outside for a walk around the block. Like getting out the door for the run, it never sounds great but once they finish, everyone will be happy and fulfilled because they did; share the feeling.

The holidays are a good time to be nursing a running injury ... NOT, it's never a good time! Time for CORE, CORE, CORE, yoga, and all those other insufferable non-aerobic activities! Can you tell I'm a bit frustRATED!!! Time for a deep breath, sure, it could be worse. Sure, like saying, Mrs. Lincoln, sorry about your loss ... but how did you enjoy the play? I needed to get that out of my system, sorry for the rant ... I'll be just fine. For those of you gimping out there, grief shared is grief diminished, I hope this cheered you up!

Enjoy every healthy day!

Randy Step, an obsessed runner, taking long, nose breathing, cleansing breaths ... Namaste

PS: Join us at the movies! What better way to spend a Tuesday evening in January? After the run of course!
Running Fit will be at the Ann Arbor 20 and The Livonia 20 on Haggerty for the Hood to Coast Run movie. December 15, 2010 - Laughing All the Way!

Yo run gang,

Winter, the real deal! Finally, some decent weather to test our resolve and earn true satisfaction for our super human efforts! Yee Ha! It feels good to get the dust off the YakTrax and put in some winter miles with no wimps in sight.

Yes, It's a busy time of year, but don't let the Holiday rush get you down and don't stress about your running, just getting out the door is all that is needed to call it a successful run, forget distance or pace, no torture necessary, just overdress and run short. Not to worry, we will soon we hit a new year with new goals and a more serious schedule, but for now, chill ... But only after that short, fun run!

Get outside!

Randy Step, an obsessed runner, laughing all the way...

December 8, 2010 - Movie Night! Popcorn!

Yo run gang,

We live in a world obsessed with weight, body image, and diets. Along with this fixation the numbers of people fighting anorexia and bulimia and the amount of money spent on weight loss products, diets and fat reduction surgery has grown exponentially.  As runners and walkers, we are far from immune to this obsession and the many negative and even dangerous and addictive aspects of it. It's not like we don't know this stuff but I find it helpful to be reminded so we can take stock and be honest with ourselves.

We know the answer is not a weight loss diet but for us to work towards a healthy way of eating that we can live with and enjoy all our lives. Weight comes down to calories consumed, calories burned and the genetically pre-disposed bodies we have. Stay active and get out the door. Enjoy the physical and psychological benefits of the run on a regular basis and look for the joy it adds to your life. With our different genetic makeup and our own life story, we get in trouble when we compare. Forget body image and learn to love the body you have and appreciate the differences between us all. We are fast, slow, tall, short, big breasted, flat chested, bald, hairy, thin, heavy ... our differences are interesting and endless, like the differences in wine and food! Enjoy!!

Fast or slow, love yourself and love your run!

Randy Step, an obsessed distance runner, enjoying my runs more each year ... even as I slow down and get more wrinkles! Go figure?

PS: Join Us at the Movies!
Running Films are few and far between!

As we follow four teams from their preparations through the big day, we realize that winning isn't everything in a film that takes a celebratory look at personal motivation and attempting the extraordinary. Plus, appearances from Alberto Salazar, Mary Decker Slaney, and Bart Yasso!

Running Fit is pleased to announce that the film will be released in theaters for a special, one-night event on January 11th, 2011 (1-11-11). November 24, 2010 - Turkey Turpor

Yo run gang,

Black Friday shopping tip: Save your sanity and get out and run before you shop. You will be a calmer, more patient and critical thinking shopper who makes better buying decisions!

Toning Shoes?  Merit or marketing gimmick? I've mentioned them before but because we are asked this all the time ... We took the time to speak with local podiatrists, physical therapists and chiropractors for some perspective on this latest craze and got the same answer over and over again, that there is not one peer review article from medical professionals stating that these shoes have any effect on toning muscles.  What people feel is the rocker motion of the shoes, and the perception is they are working their muscles. There are many people looking for the magic pill that will make them younger, thinner, prettier, smarter, stronger, fitter, etc. The truth is, after buying toning shoes, many people get out for a walk or run, perhaps for the first time in years, what they feel is the benefits of a walk or run (something we already know) and credit the shoes. Another concern is the unknown, the possible long term negative effects of these shoes. Many of the major shoe companies are pushing for Running Fit to cash in on the craze but darn, we're taking the high road ... or else I would be writing a shameless plug ... One that might include a sexy backside photo!

November 10, 2010 - From the front lines

Yo run gang,

As the world continues to get more complex due to technology I can only bet the insanity rate goes up proportionately. Yikes! The down to basics psychological and physical freedom the run brings is becoming proportionally more precious. When it comes to scheduling your priorities, never underestimate the value of the daily run!

If our day to day lives seem complex and stressful, I can only imagine the what difficulties and stress our US military troops face, around the clock for their entire tours of duty in Iran, Afghanistan and every other dangerous places they are sent.  Keep them in your thoughts and prayers tomorrow, Veterans Day, and every other day they are out there on the line for us. I have received several emails from Running Fit customers on tours of duty telling me how much they appreciate the midweek mail. They explain the difficulties of getting in runs in dangerous combat areas, not to mention searing desert heat, but they do get them in, again, priorities. The attached picture shows Vernon Pratt and Company posted in Afghanistan, we sent them Run Woodstock T-shirts and other race goodies so they could participate from afar! Vernon and company, you ROCK!

Run and be safe,

Randy Step, an obsessed runner in the land of the free, where freedom does not come free.

Subject: Hey man, what can a Soldier do......

Man am I sorry I am not home for this run. Our unit is deployed to Afghanistan and there are a number of us who are avid runners; we enter any and all sponsored runs here on Bagram Airfield. I myself have sponsored a run initiative where Soldiers are rewarded for mileage totals; for 100 miles a certificate of achievement from me, 500 miles and coin of excellence from the Command Sergeant Major, and 1000 miles a coin of excellence from our Commanding General. Anyhow, would it be possible to obtain t-shirts from your run? I would love to show off your run which I think is totally cool.

November 17, 2010 - Running, Naturally

Yo run Gang,

The focus of my midweek mail usually targets motivation but today I'm writing during my midday break at The Running Event in Austin, Texas, a conference for the specialty running store. We get together at as an industry and share what we are doing to bring back to you the best in products, training information and anything that might add to your running experience. Yes, we are here working hard for you but it's a labor of love ... not to mention it's a convention that starts each day with a group run (Where they give us all new shoes to try out) what's not to love!

So far, the key topics have been the natural running movement and compression apparel. Natural running focuses on form and lighter, neutral, minimalist footwear and even barefoot running. For years the industry has focused on putting runners in footwear based on foot type and the runners gait. The shift is to suggest better running form instead of putting the runner in controlling shoes to compensate for bad form. The most common form issue is over striding. A long stride results with striking the heel first, causing the runner to actually break their forward movement, causing impact that leads to many common running injuries. Cutting the stride in half cuts the impact and the motions of the joints to almost zero. By shortening stride and striking midfoot, the runner can run with lighter less controlling footwear. How to tell if you are over striding? If you wear your heels down you most likely over stride. A way to check is to count one arm swing during one minute of running, by getting this number to 80 or more, your stride will be about right. We will be offering form clinics to give you more tricks, stay tuned!

Compression apparel is hot, hot, hot! Wearing compression tights on a run can cut the perceived effort by 25%, it does this by reducing energy lost to muscle vibration and improving circulation. Compression has been used in the medical industry for years but has only recentlly has it become a staple product for sports. Take a look in the running publications and you will see compression socks  or calf sleeves on most world class runners, they would only use these products if they experienced the benefits. The most common use for compression is to wear it after the run, it promotes healing and faster recoveries. Today while talking to many top US distance runners at the conference, all agreed they wear compression calf sleeves or socks when traveling to and from events, making a huge difference in giving them fresh legs to race with!

Get out and run,

Randy Step, an obsessed runner who's finding new toys just for you! Hmmm ... new stuff always motivates me out the door, I gues my focus was motivation afterall!

November 3, 2010 - I DO love winter...

Yo Run Gang,

As the fall race season draws to end you might find the motivation to get out the door also coming to an end ... Don't let this happen! Think of the shape you want to be in when it's time to line up again next spring. Think of the personal records and goals you thought about during this running year and where you hope to be next year, CHAMPIONS ARE MADE IN WINTER!

Those who put in the winter miles have the base needed to rock as the spring run season heats up, those who don't get them in have to put up with the setbacks often seen while increasing mileage and getting "Back" in shape. You will be starting out in spring with a good mileage and strength base. Outdoor winter running will give you strength, the heavy clothing, the varied footing, all play into getting the ancillary muscles of the body into play. I'll see you on the roads and in the woods, seeing stuff you won't on a treadmill! Yes, treadmill running is way better than no running and has its own unique benefits, but you do need to get outside consistently for sanity and all the above.

Run against the wind, then with it!

Randy, an obsessed runner who loves winter, who loves winter, who loves winter (Sorry, I need to keep up the mantra)

October 20, 2010 - I love winter...

Yo run gang,

The chill in the morning air and the crunch of leaves underfoot are reminders that winter runs are coming soon. Love and hate are choices, and because winter is part of living in Michigan, my wife and I made a decision to love winter... rather than complaining about it. To help make this happen, whenever the topic of winter comes up we answer with our new mantra, we love winter, we love winter, we love winter. The truth, we were not big fans of most aspects of winter but by dressing properly and getting out for the daily run, we find we actually do love the active outdoor times in winter and with our new attitude and our new mantra we continue to find more and more to love about winter. Join us and make the I love winter choice!

I'll be heading up a winter running Clinic at 6:30 PM on Wednesday November 3rd at Northville Running Fit and Tuesday November 9th at 5700 Jackson Rd. Ann Arbor. We'll show you tricks on how to dress and where to run. Make this the winter you get outside! I'm working on the manufacturers for some give-A-ways but we will for sure have a drawing and will offer discounts on the latest and greatest in winter run wear on clinic night. RSVP to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. with the subject: "I want to go out and play!" For those of you who can get there early, join me for an optional run at 5:30 PM, 3 to 6 miles, all paces welcome. If you plan to run, mention it in your RSVP.

Get outside and run,

Randy Step, an obsessed runner who loves winter, yep, I love winter, I love winter...

October 13, 2010 - To the finish line!

Yo run gang,

So, how long will we continue to be runners? I always say, until they throw the dirt on!  As we age our pace and goals will change but the psychological and physical benefits of our running won’t. Yes we may be sidelined, nothing in life is a given but until or “if” that happens, we can continue to focus on the next day’s run … and the goal for our next race, yes, at any age! Seeing  Jim Forshee  battle with Dick Sarns in the 80 to 84 age group at the Bighouse Bigheart 5K, not to mention seeing finishers in the 85 -89 and 90-94 year  age groups proves my point!

I do have a habit of repeating the important stuff … It’s Free Press Marathon & Half Marathon this weekend in Detroit, a motivational and exciting time for the sport of running in Michigan. Even if you are not running, make the pilgrimage to the city, check out the race expo on Friday and Saturday (Visit the Running Fit booth!), and cheer on the Runner’s Sunday morning. You will find it to be a motivational, inspirational jolt for the future of your running life. Lastly, make sure you get in a run while you’re in the “D”!

Run till the end,

Randy Step, an obsessed runner … headed to the “D”!

October 6, 2010 - Extreme Skirts

Yo run gang,

I love extremes ... But I must admit, glorious fall days also rock the run! Don't you love a fall run that starts in the cold and dark, heads through a breathtaking sunrise, then, as the day quickly heats up, finds you sweating like it's a summer day and stripping down to the basics by the end. There is a bit of magic in a run that takes you from the night into the day, it's not easy to explain but it seems to give the satisfaction and feeling of the long run, powerful, like a run that lasts 2 days.

I'm not sure if it's politically correct, (sexist?), to say it but I think the running skirt is a flattering look on women. For some, it's a great alternative to the despised lycra shorts or tights...Personally, I think it would be fun to jazz it up a bit and try the winter skirt over tights... but I'm just a guy, who wishes I could sport the plaid shorty... just sayin'.... Skirt Sports got my vote for product of the week ... The decade!

Yikes! The Freep Marathon and Half Marathon are a week from Sunday! For those of you who have trained and put in the miles needed to toe the line, I salute your commitment! For those of you with the half marathon or marathon on the bucket list as a future goal, may I suggest you head to Detroit and cheer on the runners. Watching a marathon is an inspirational and motivational experience that can help you to achieve your running goals. Running or not, come visit the Running Fit booth at the expo Friday and Saturday for great deals on fun stuff!

Final thought: For those of you who did not train as much as you had planned but will still be toeing the starting line ... There is Ibuprofen!

Run forever,

Randy Step, an obsessed runner

September 29, 2010 - Dress for Success

Yo run gang,

The changing of the seasons adds some excitement to our simple sport. On the warm days, dressing to run is mindless, just wear as little as possible, but when the temp drops, some thought is necessary to enjoy the run. I move to a long sleeve wicking base layer as we go  into the 50's, as it dips to the mid 40's to 30's, on come the gloves, hat, tights and perhaps a vest or jacket depending on the wind. For the snow I wear Yak Tracks for traction and start to layer up. The time to prepare is now so the transition to winter will not keep you from getting in your run but will add to your running adventure! The latest high tech fashions are now flowing onto the racks at Running Fit and we are ready to get you suited up for success!

The Bighouse Bigheart 5K and 10K race is Sunday and it looks like a perfect base-layer long sleeve sunny day in the 50's! I'm looking forward to running into the stadium and hope to see you there! Enter at Bighousebigheart.com . Next weekend is the Vasa 5K, 10K and 25K Trail Run in Traverse City, a fall color tour road trip and natural beauty run! Enter at runvasa.com

Shameless Plug: For those not headed north to Vasa: John Farah, a friend, marathon runner and loyal Running Fit customer's son has produced a movie here in Michigan called "Answer this!" Support our local economy and join me on the Red Carpet at Friday Oct. 8th . If you want, meet us at Ann Arbor Downtown Running Fit at 6:30 PM and walk up the street to hangout on the red carpet and meet the producer, writer and stars, Showtime is 7:30pm, you will not be disappointed! The story, shot in Ann Arbor, is about a group of frustrated academics who finally get a shot at beer, women and nerdy redemption when they enter the most important contest of their lives... the First Annual Ann Arbor Trivia Tournament. ANSWER THIS! is an authentic Michigan story about a grad student finally coming of age - when he's 30. Advance tickets available here and www.answerthismovie.com .

September 22, 2010 - Peace Out!

Yo run gang,

I can't imagine life without a passion, we all know people who just seem to be going through day to day life, they sleep, work, eat, clean house, make check lists, work on check lists, sleep, retire, die. Fire up the running passion and transcend the day to day trap!

The smells of fall are filling the daily runs. I am amazed how the miles fly by fueled with the smells, sights and sounds of a country dirt road, single track trail through the woods or even running down a subdivision street. We are truly blessed by the 4 seasons ... even the one I'm not such a big fan of ...

I'm headed off to Hell Creek Ranch today for Run Woodstock, I invite you to come by and say hi! Thursday is a set up, the decorating day, come by any time from morning until dark. Friday the music (5 bands) starts at 4 PM and goes until 9PM,  and Saturday music is from 9 AM - 9 PM, with a bit of yoga from 2-3PM,  you can get into visit for just $5, or sign up at runwoodstock.com and join us for one or many of the morning and evening  runs!  Volunteers are always welcome, email This email address is being protected from spambots. Run with passion and peace out,

September 15, 2010 - Cold & Lonely

Yo run gang,

A body in motion stays in motion. As I headed out for the run this morning I had all the negative thoughts, it's dark, it's cold, I have so much other stuff to get done ... when the reality was, the sun would soon be up, it's not like it was a wicked winter day and if I skipped the run now I would not get to work that much sooner and I'd be cutting out at lunch or earlier to run anyway. On top of all this, my wife was joining me so it was not going to be cold, dark and lonely. So, knowing all these things and knowing that once out the door I would eventually get into the groove, love the run and would be happy and satisfied that I did run, it still took what seemed to be a serious effort to get out the door, but I did what I always do, I headed out the door. The moral of the story, nothing good comes easy so get to work, perhaps don't think, just get out and run.

During our run my wife, a Nurse Practitioner specializing in geriatric medicine, said that the secret to longevity is to just keep moving. One example she used was that once a person starts to use a wheel chair to ease the burden of walking, their chances of never walking again are very good and it goes downhill from there. It seemed to me that running teaches us this at an earlier stage in life, giving us a leg up as we keep moving ahead!

Never ever, ever stop!

Randy Step, an obsessed runner ...  with no good excuses not to be.

September 8, 2010 - Full Moon

Yo run gang,

I just returned from a blustery, beautiful run down a country dirt road, for me, it was perhaps as good as it gets. Keep those priorities in order and get out the door, I'm sure you will be a better person for it so, no excuses!

Last week I talked about speed, a term relative to the runner, for some, it may be running your first full mile without walking, finishing in 13 minutes, a personal record! Your P.R.! The next goal might be 2 miles or to aim for your first 5K race. A good first time choice would be the Big House Big Heart run on October 3rd. There will be lots of walkers so no matter what, you won't be intimidated. Take the plunge and enter at bighousebigheart.com . Finishing on the 50 yard line of the Bighouse is way cool, they also offer a 10K!

Speaking of speed and goals, we'd like to congratulate a member of the Running Fit Novi Crew, Doug Goodhue. Doug met his goal this weekend when he ran the 20K American Record for men, 65 - 70 years old, running two back to back 40 minute 10Ks for a time of 1:20:05. We are proud and lucky to have the fastest over 65 guy in the US on staff, not only fitting shoes and inspiring new runners but also as a coach for our 501 half marathon/marathon group! See runningfit501.com

Self Defense class is coming to the Northville store at 6:30 PM - 8 PM, Tuesday September 14th. The class is limited to the first 15 who click here to sign up! The class reviews have been great and the sense of security you get by being trained will give you a lifetime of peace of mind. Great stuff! Class Fee is $70.

Last but not least, have you ever ran a night trail run? At Run Woodstock, a Friday night 5K and Saturday night 10K are only a couple of the many weekend runs offered. The event is September 24-25 ... just after the full moon! You need a weekend like Run Woodstock, notice how I keep repeating the important stuff? Runwoodstock.com . Yes, you can run the half marathon then head out and do the 5 mile course to get in 20 on trails, three weeks out from the Free Press Marathon. You can also run 20 road miles the same day on Hines Drive; click here for details

Run on down, run on down, run on down, run on down a country road ...

September 1, 2010 - Run fast, take chances!

Yo run gang,

I'm amazed at the volume of running articles and blogs focused on how to run races, or should I say, complete races, with the least training and fitness level possible. Yes, this information has a positive side, it lowers the intimidation level, brings new people to the sport and as John Bingham would say, "Gives them the courage to start", all good stuff. Because of the success of this message, the average finishing time for a marathon has gotten an hour slower in the past 10 years and similar slower averages are seen in shorter events. It's true that the joy of running can be experienced at many levels but I'm feeling a responsibility to add balance to the running message, spreading the word that it's also OK to train hard, run high mileage and to run FAST! Yes, it's a wonderful feeling and great accomplishment to finish a marathon even if it takes over 5 hours, but the world also needs to hear that it's VERY COOL to run a marathon time that starts with 3 hours or even 2 hours! With greater commitment to the sport comes greater risks but ... BIG TIME REWARDS, especially on the self esteem side. I should mention that running a Boston Marathon qualifying time is not out of reach if you dare to dream big! Check out this link and set your goal!  http://www.bostonmarathon.org/bostonmarathon/qualifying.asp.
How to get faster? Runners are creatures of habit. We run the same routes at the same time at the same pace. We don't get faster ... duh?  To get faster we have to jump on the track. To get faster we need to Increase our mileage, change our course, change our pace and maybe change our form. Are you ready to run fast and take chances? Read More.. .

Run fast, take chances,

Randy Step, an obsessed runner, who hopes to line up with you in Boston!

August 18, 2010 - Simply Great!

Red Carpet RandyYo Run gang,

Running is "Simply" the best.  I spent a summer weekend at a non-running friend's cottage that included jet skies, ATV's, gas cans and dragging around big trailers. My next summer weekend was at a cottage with running friends, it included morning and evening runs and walks on the beach and a special day starting with a social 3 mile run to town for the Blueberry festival 5K followed by the 3 mile run home discussing the world again. Oh yeah, both included fine wine and both were fun weekends with great friends ... But as I said, this running life is "Simply" the best!

Randy Step, an obsessed runner, manning the fluid station at the Red Carpet Run!

2010-08-11 - Hot!

Yo Run gang,

Heat and humidity are brutal and should be taken seriously. The upside? It's efficient, short runs feel long and the muscles, tendons and joints sure work great when it's hot. Enjoy the steamy, hazy morning runs and remember, the leaves will be changing in about 6 weeks.
Yikes!

Mark your calendars and join me for a running weekend in the woods, September 24-26, Run Woodstock will spirit you back to an era of peace, love, music and RUNNING! Life is complicated, we all need an escape from reality weekend like this where we camp out on the land and set our souls free, along with our inner hippie! Organized morning and evening runs on the trails with plenty of time to mellow out on the lawn listening to 5 classic rock bands. With carbo dinners served on Friday and Saturday night, Run Woodstock is the perfect setting to get in the final long mileage for you fall marathon folks. I plan on running 5K Friday night, the Flower Power 5 mile or Hippie Half Marathon Saturday morning (The half and 10K make for a fun 20 mile day, 3 weeks out from the Freep Marathon!), the  Trippin' 10K Saturday night and the Free Love 5 Mile on Sunday morning. Join us for one of the runs or the full weekend, non running family and friends will dig the jams, camping and commune atmosphere so invite the world. There will be hippie hikes, hippie dips and great music for runners and non runners. Camping is limited so grab a spot at Runwoodstock.com.

Another date to save is October 3rd, Ann Arbor's Big House Big Heart 5K & 10K offers the perfect running tour of Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan and finishing on the 50 yard line in the Big House is too cool to miss! Bighousebigheart.com

Peace out,

August 4, 2010 - Workin' Hard!

Yo Run Gang,

I'm writing from the Outdoor Retailer's convention in Utah where I'm on the job... for you! Yep, I'm working hard, once again, it's a tough job but someone has to do it! I kept busy on day one of the convention testing new shoes and other running products on mountain trails above Park City. The convention kicked off with a run put on by Trail Runner Magazine where our vendors were at the start handing us the products to test. Shoes, packs, GPS units, wicking and odor free apparel, waterproof cases for cell phones, even a straw that has a filter and lets you grab a quick drink from any lake of stream.

Seriously, I am here to sift through the thousands of new products offered to find the few items that will be available to you on the shelves at Running Fit. Ours is a simple sport that the world wants to complicate, finding things that will add value to the joy we already get from our runs are few and far between. When I do find running accessories that fits this criteria it's exciting to bring them back to share with you.

I'll see you next week, Thursday night August 12th, on the Red Carpet! redcarpetrun.com

Enjoy this running day ... as I head back to work!

July 21, 2010 - Core Truths!

Yo Run gang,

I'm writing this today at a picnic table beachside as we set up for tonight's SOLD OUT Pterodactyl Triathlon! Diggin' summer!

Yesterday I celebrated a wedding anniversary with my high school sweetheart Kathy. I'm sure a shared life of running and triathlons has added some glue to the relationship, I'm a lucky guy.  I also believe it's never to late to apply some fresh shared fitness glue at any stage of the relationship! Speaking of weddings, we have made it a habit to give the gift of running shoes to the bride and groom at many a wedding sharing what has worked for us. Come to think of it, a Running Fit bridal registry might be just the ticket!

July 14, 2010 - The Passion!

Yo Run gang,

This running and fitness lifestyle is truly a blessing, I cannot imagine life without a passion, better yet, a positive passion. I was driving behind a truck with lots of stickers about field training dogs, dog events, even a dog vanity plate . Much of it made no sense to me much like a 26.2 sticker might not make sense to them but you could just feel the passion. The meaning of life? Perhaps not, but certainly a huge and important part to a fulfilled and complete life, making getting out the door a priority you don't want to mess with! Get out and run, it is essential for your happiness and wellbeing. How's that for justification!

Events are the spice of this running life! The Northville Roadrunners put on a classy little race at Maybury State Park: "The Road Runner Classic 8K (5 miles)" is on July 24th, they always make it fun. Enter at northvilleroadrunners.org. July 7, 2010 - Back Off!

Yo Run gang,

When running alone I would run through scenarios in my head of some idiot or lunatic assaulting me and how I would respond .. in these day dreams, me, a scrawny runner dude, would throw a sucker punch and the bad guys would run off ... sure.  As runners we all have stories, I've been yelled at and have had beer cans thrown at me from rednecks in trucks and I've had a confrontation with a guy on a mountain bike threatening to beat me up the next time I run on the trail in the same direction that he rides. In most cases I was smart and did not yell back ... but a couple times, when I knew the terrain well ... I've had to put the hammer down and make some quick moves to escape. Dumb.

I've considered taking a self defense class but the ones I've seen all seemed hokey, until I met this character Lee Shaykhet, a smart dude who once trained special forces in the former Soviet Union, a guy I would call the real deal. I met Lee in the store while he was in town teaching defensive moves to a local police department. Everything he said about self defense made sense in a way I have never heard before. Since, I have had a bit of training with Lee and I can tell you it gives instant confidence. When you encounter a situation, you will naturally respond the way you are trained. Lee's training is simple, smart and unbelievable effective,  the simple moves he demonstrated and the common sense suggestions on how to react will stick with me forever. It's a truly liberating feeling.

I'd call this a shameless plug but it's something I believe can change your confidence in a way you might not have imagined. Lee has agreed to give a group session on Thursday July 15th from 6:30 PM - 8PM at Running Fit at 5700 Jackson Rd. The class is limited to the first 20 to RSVP to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. The introductory price for this training is $70, you can pay at the register on class night. I see it as a lifetime of confidence for about the price of a good sports massage. Make that 19 spots available, I just signed up my daughter! Did I mention, besides being deadly serious, this class is actually fun and entertaining!

June 30, 2010 - Shoe Love...

Yo run gang,

For those of us with a favorite running shoe model, life is good, it’s when you’re in between and searching … that no run can feel just perfect, good maybe, even great … but not perfect. As a running store guy I can still only get so much advice on what shoes might work for me. By knowing my foot type, the mileage I’m running and what shoes I’ve liked in the past, the brilliant staff at Running Fit can narrow down my choices and after trying on the several suggestions I can head out the door with the best fit, the best guess. With this system I often find shoes that I like and that work well for me … but the real answer will not be known until I’ve grooved in a bunch of miles and get to know the shoes and how they perform for me, intimately. Like so much in life, it’s not until we’ve been down many roads and in all conditions do we know the experience is, true love. Shoe love?

I’m currently loving my Brooks Cascadia trail shoes, as for my road shoes “I really like” my Mizuno Elixers … the search continues, but a pleasant search it is.

Love your run,

Randy Step, an obsessed runner, taking a serious look at a pair of “Nike Lunar Elites” … and wondering when Nike stopped using “Air” in their shoes? Shoping, searching.

June 23, 2010 - Comin' Back!

Yo Run Gang,

My friend Karen trained diligently all winter to run a 50K mountain race. A week out from the event a rock shot out from her lawnmower, shattering her tibia.

Life is not fair and as athletes we are reminded of this often. There are no givens, in training, racing or life. When aiming at a long term goal we put a lot of life's eggs in one basket, a risk-reward scenario. The risks are high, a lot can happen during several months of training, especially as race week draws near when  our bodies are on the edge, ready for injury or sickness.

We can hope for the best, but need to have a plan for the worst. By reminding ourselves that there is perhaps an 80% chance of making it to the starting line we might train a bit smarter, taking days off when a pain comes up or we are feeling run down. We might be more flexible with our plans, keeping family and friends intact. The worst case scenario plan? Be ready to switch gears 180 degrees when tragedy hits, putting all our effort in a new direction, making a plan for recovery and getting just as focused on the next big comeback as we did for original plan.

Dang, why is it that the hardest things in life to do are the right things?

Run smart,

Randy Step, an obsessed runner, inching my way back from injury ... while wanting to run back!

Do it all,

June 2, 2010 - Birthday

Yo Run Gang,

Birthdays are a celebration of life so why let age get in the way? After one hits adulthood the actual age of a person is not very relevant, actually, even keeping track of your age can be detrimental, you are either too young or too old, by just mentioning your age you open yourself up to age discrimination either way. Better to be judged by your accomplishments along the way.

This may not be a popular thought, but I believe age groups in running need re-thinking. I often get an age group medal that I would not have if I was in the next older age group where people ran faster than I did. This happens more often in the younger age groups ... so why should a younger age group winner get an award for running a time slower than an older runner?  Should you get an award just because no fast people your age show up?  Wouldn't it be better if the awards were given to the top so many % or runners, just based on time? Better yet, if you want to keep age groups, throw out any times of all runners who ran slower than anyone older than themselves, then calculate the awards. This would encourage us all to train that much harder. Just some birthday thoughts ... on my birthday!

This weekend brings us a Michigan classic, the race from Dexter to Ann Arbor. Point to point races seem to make more sense than running like heck, only to end up where you started! The race is sold out but it's fun to go to Ann Arbor anyway to enjoy this great city, the race weekend party atmosphere only adds to the fun, besides, you can take advantage of the race weekend sale at Running Fit (Sorry for the shameless plug!)

Run forever,

May 26, 2010 - Minimalism!

Yo run gang,

While playing (running) in the woods this morning, I was again reminded that running really is play time, an escape from the so called "important" activities of this adult life. Running gives us time to be ageless, a time to put our mind, body and soul into an activity with little practical value ... NOT! The late runner philosopher Dr. George Sheehan once said, "running is like religion and play, it resembles art and music, filling an area of life with great importance ... perhaps one of our most important functions, helping us discover and form the self, a place of self discovery"... Running really does ROCK!

Minimalist running is all the craze and the Vibram 5 Toe shoes are leading the retail end of the charge, basically a rubber glove of a shoe, allowing one to run barefoot with some protection of the foot. We don't suggest you go out and start putting in your miles in 5 Toes but to slowly work your way up as the foot strengthens. Running in 5 Toes will help teach your body proper form and will increase foot strength, a worthwhile addition to the runner's arsenal, not to mention, they are just plain fun to kick around in!

Do I dare include a link to a banned Nike ad for minimalist shoes and "Natural" training, we're talking about the "Bare" basics here ... What the heck, (youtube.com/watch?v=m474JNTLKnQ ) If you find this fun, join us at runwoodstock.com .

Get out and play,

Randy Step, an obsessed runner who's idol is Peter Pan!

May 19, 2010 - Help me with my bike, please

Yo run gang,

Enjoy every healthy running day. I recently took a fall and need some run time off, luckily, I can bike and swim with the injury, and I'm a triathlete for the summer ... Or else I might have had to been put on suicide prevention watch! Seriously, it's good to have options, like a diversified investment strategy, but I can't wait to get back to running, the "Blue Chip" of all fitness activities!

Some days you need to blow your own horn. If you are fans of Running Fit, please take a sec to vote us #1! Go to www.competitor.com/50Best and tell them why we are the best. Last year, Competitor received more than 12,000 nominations, which play a critical role in determining the selection of the 50 Best, (We made that list!) with the Naperville Running Company honored as the 2009 Store of the Year. We'd love to be in their shoes! (Their shoes? That sounds wrong for some reason!)

Forbes Magazine prints a list of Rip-Offs, yesterday's was the curved soled shoes that supposedly work your butt... but mostly affect the foot and ankle. I hate gimmicky crap. http://finance.yahoo.com/family-home/article/109576/10-ways-youre-getting-ripped-off

Check out our product of the week, I promise it will be worth your while to make a trip to Running Fit H.Q. for deals as we do our spring cleaning!

Run every day you can,

Randy Step, an obsessed runner ... hauling a bike around.

May 12, 2010 - Run Like an Animal!

Yo run gang,

Running gets us down to bedrock. Each run requires basic physical and mental strength just to head out the door. Some days, our body lets us know it really doesn't want to do this, much like dragging an unwilling dog on leash with his paws kicking and dragging. Ahh, but on those days when our bodies are jumping and barking at the door, ready to go ... We marvel at the "X" Games and sports that are called "Extreme", when in reality, there is no more extreme sport than distance running, one that has us heading out, day after day to do battle and keep the edge, heading out regardless of how we feel or what the conditions, knowing that nothing good comes easy and what we will get for our hard work and extreme behavior is good, very good. When race day dawns, hang on to that leash tight and be ready to keep up with a happy, well trained body, pulling us forward to personal greatness. Now, give yourself a pat on the head!

Run like an animal,

Randy Step, an obsessed runner, and extreme athlete, just like you!

May 5, 2010 - Snorkle?

Yo run gang,

As an obsessed runner, my goal is to run for a lifetime. For that to happen, I believe the body needs core strength, recovery and seasonal changes in training, dang, don't you just hate that? Like so many things in life, the sacrifices needed to accomplish long term goals are worth it.

My system the last few years is to become a triathlete for summer, training starts after my spring marathon and goes through August, then back to fall marathon training! Well, Boston is over and I'm at it. I find the convenience of jumping in a lake to get in my swim beats going to a pool, besides, the open water experience helps in the event. The water temp is only 60 or so now but with the right stuff, the temp matters little. (Do you feel a shameless plug coming on?) My Zoot Fusion full wetsuit fits and works great. We tested several and it's one we stock at Running Fit, $300 makes it a reasonably priced. I wear an insulated swim cap, swim gloves and swim socks made by "Blue Seventy", I also like their open water swim goggles. Swim accessories are at our 5700 Jackson Rd. store in Ann Arbor, in Novi, and online at runningfit.com. Did I mention my swim snorkel?

Swim, Bike, RUN!

April 28, 2010 - Philip Legat at Running Fit!

Yo run gang,

It's a combination of things that get us out the door and running each day, one that fires me up big time are stories of inspiration. It's a gift to encounter bigger than life people living and performing on the edge, way beyond my comfort zone, I believe it helps inch my edge a bit farther out, make the power of inspiration part of your training! May I invite you to a night of inspiration!

After being stuck in a Nairobi airport for 2 days while volcanic ash caused 16,000 flight cancellations across Europe, Kenyan runner Philip Lagat finally arrived in Iowa for the 101st edition of the Drake Relays after 20 hrs of constant travel.

This was on April 24th, 2010, (yes, 3 days ago). Philip lined up next to the great Bernard Lagat (no relation) who is the 2008 Olympic Champion in the 1500m and has run the 2nd fastest time ever for this distance. This race was Phillip's second mile race in his life on a track. Philip finished the race in 3rd position with a scintillating time of 3:57.55, just behind Bernard Lagat, who was beaten by yet another Kenyan wonder runner named Boaz Lalang. This performance demonstrates that Philip is one of the greats with a talent level that ranges between the 800m to the 1/2 marathon, and what we are offering is a chance to hear his story first hand.

Come and join us at Running Fit's Ann Arbor store headquarters at 5700 Jackson road, Ann Arbor, at 7 PM, Thursday, May 6, 2010. Hear his story, get his autograph, and meet a Kenyan runner who has travelled thousands of miles to make a better life for himself and his family. A donation of a couple bucks to Phillip is appreciated to help with his journey.

Run inspired,

Randy Step, an obsessed runner who stands in awe, then heads out the door to do homage.

April 21, 2010 - Boston Survivor!

Yo run gang,

Its been many years since I last ran the Boston Marathon and I swore Id never go back. From what I remember it was a race put on by an unresponsive old boys kind of club and had a crowded disorganized start at noon on a rainy cold Monday. I ran my worst marathon time ever thinking back, Im sure my poor time and the rain contributed heavily to my bad memories. Last year, my son ran a Boston qualifying marathon time and this past Monday, my wife, my son and myself ran the Boston Marathon. Kathy and Trevor ran stellar marathons and the event organization was incredible. I was dreading a start with 26,000,000 people on a road that I remembered was crowded with 4,000. What I experienced was great fast start and a fun and exciting flawless event that ranks at the top of my race experiences and I ran poorly! The moral of the story, old dogs can learn new tricks and every race deserves a second chance. I encourage everyone to put running Boston on the bucket list. The people of Boston are incredible, they love the marathon and love the runners and add much to this must do event!

We all love the solitude of the daily run and the mental and psychological benefits, but toeing the line in a spring race gives our training additional purpose and meaning. Here are few fun upcoming races to consider, great choices to P.R., or to race for your first time ever at the distance.
